About
Vetehi is derived from the Finnish word “vetehinen”, referring to mermen or the rulers of waters. They are a subspecies of dragons, evolved to look more like humans in order to lure humans in and hunt them.
Plural: vetehi (“two vetehi”; “there were many vetehi”)
Plural: vetehi (“two vetehi”; “there were many vetehi”)
It is said these creatures used to look like feral dragons in the past, but as humans started threatening their home waters, they were forced to change their living habits. Thanks to an ancient magic, these dragons were able to take a more human-like form in order to lure humans in and hunt them to survive.
Nowadays majority of vetehi know nothing of magic, and it seems most of them look rather human by now. However, it is said that somewhere in the deepest of oceans live vetehi that have remained more dragon than human, and are said to be eve ten times larger than any surface vetehi, drowning ships with their massive tails and even going as far as eating other vetehi.
Vetehi can most commonly be found from seas, but they can live in any water area they can just access. Sometimes they are sold as pets or put on a display, but as these creatures are close to humans in intelligence, they are hard to catch and even harder to tame or domesticate if they don’t want to cooperate.
These creatures usually can’t read, but they exchange stories orally and have a great memory. They also live very long and are fast learners, and it’s not impossible to teach them to read and write. They usually speak their own language, but many also know the language of the mainland so it’s easier for them to lure humans in for their deadly embrace. Due to their good memory, they usually learn new languages very fast as long as they can just observe those who speak it.

Disclaimer and info
Vetehi are a subspecies of a dragon, and as such they are not an “original species”. I don’t own the rights to water dragons or merpeople in general or as a concept. However, the choices and lore I have made with this subspecies in particular are mine. So it goes without saying that please don't copy or make a knockoff: I'm sure you can come up with better ideas on your own instead.
- Vetehi are a closed species. This means you can’t make your own for free unless otherwise stated.
